The Do Vocal Exercise

Hi, this is Larissa Lam, and on behalf of Expert Village we're continuing our series on proper singing technique. Now a lot of people just like to sing songs. I knew when I took singing lessons; I always was begging my teacher to let me sing a song, please! But instead my singing teacher had me do these exercises, which I'm going to share with you today too. Now trust me, this may seem really repetitive, and it may not, it may seem very awkward. But it will be great foundation for you to be singing your heart out. Now this exercise is called the Doe exercise. Doe is kind of a nice, open sound. It's got a hard consonant with the D, and the O, which is a nice open vowel. And you're able to really kind of sing out a little bit more. This will help strengthen your vocal chords with this exercise. Now I want you to make sure that you breathe properly with your diaphragm and sing out. If you crack, don't worry about it, just pick back up. Support the breath and continue on. Make sure you have those nice round sounds. Doe. Doe. Doe. Now if this is too low for you, go ahead and just wait until the music gets a little bit higher so that you can start singing. Doe. Doe. Doe. As you're going up the scale, you should be opening your mouth a little bit wider as you go up the Doe's. Doe. Doe. Doe. Doe. Doe. Doe. You see how my voice switched to the head voice at that point? That's okay, don't worry about singing perfectly. Now go to your head voice if you're higher. Doe. Doe. Doe. Doe. Doe. Doe. Breathe through your diaphragm. Doe. Doe. Doe. Open your mouth wider as you go up the scale. Doe. Doe.
