Hi, this is Larissa Lam on behalf of Expert Village. We're continuing our series on proper singing techniques. One of the mistakes that people make in singing is using their throat too much to sing rather than supporting with their diaphragm. To not over sing is really kind of an art form. If you don't practice singing properly, you actually develop bad habits. That can cause all sorts of problems down the line. Some people develop nodules on their throat which lead to having surgery. Some people just thrash their vocal chords so much, that surgery doesn't even repair them. Some people lose their voice altogether. So, we want to help you not thrash your vocal chords. This is what we call a humming exercise. Again, it's helping to practice using your diaphragm, but also using the back of throat verses using your chest and your vocal chords in a harsh way. So all you're going to do is just hum to this exercise. Here we go. You are going to close your mouth while humming. You should feel a buzzing in your nose as you're doing this (humming). So, the humming shouldn't come from the throat down here, but right up here in the nasal passages (humming). Breathe with the diaphragm (humming). It should almost sound like a buzzing bee. If you get a little bit light headed, make sure you take a break, stop for a little bit and then come back and start the exercise over again (humming). Good job! If you got into the low notes, you get bonus points.
