I will talk about what a major scale is. A major scale is a group of scale of 7 different notes that are combined together in a pattern of whole and half steps. These 7 notes are chosen from the 12 available tones of even temperament in most western music. Let's look at the pattern that makes up a major scale. You have whole step, whole step, half step, whole step, whole step, and another half step to get back to the first note of the major scale. Let's look at the piano to look at the different between whole and half steps. We have the note E flat. You go directly to the next note that is a half step as you can see there is nothing else but between these 2 notes. To go for a whole step you start in E flat and you have 2 half steps. That is a whole step. Now we know the difference between whole and half steps let's review the major scale pattern one more time. The first note is a whole step, 2nd whole step, half step, whole step, whole step, and half step. This is a major scale pattern.
