How to Choose Pedals for Downhill Mountain Biking

MICKEY DENONCOURT: There's two choices you can basically make when you're riding downhill with pedals. The type of pedals I'm riding today, which are flat pedals, where there's no retention system, just you know, a nice, big platform and some pins that stick into your shoe, or retention style pedals, clipless pedals where there's a cleat that clicks into the pedal. Today, I choose to ride this style of pedals, because I knew it was going to be kind of wet. So, in the wet, it's nice to be able to get off your bike easier, and also we're going to be doing a lot of standing around and walking around. So, obviously, you know a normal shoe is a lot better for walking uphill, than you know, a really rigid one that's designed to clip into your bike. But both styles of pedals are fine for downhill riding. Some beginner riders who don't have a lot of other biking experience, prefer these flat pedals when they start of. A lot of riders who start riding downhill and come from a more traditional mountain biking standpoint, prefer the click-in pedals, because that's where they're used to. Your pedal style does, somewhat influence, the way you ride your bike, a flat pedal like this, you know I'm moving my foot around more on the bike, like I can sort of twist my feet around while I'm on the pedal, and that's something, you can't do with the clipless pedals, cause the way they are released is by clicking out. So, you can sort of, move your bike around a little bit more when you're on flat pedals. So they're, you know, pretty fun to ride, and for conditions like today, they are a pretty good choice.
