Mercury 789, if you are looking for books for beginners you can check out the text books Genki 1 and 2. There are other good books like Japanese Particles (nice little travel book), and the YesJapan series Japanese from Zero are also very good as they slowly intergrate Hiragana in Level 1 and Katakana in Level 2. Kanji is slowly introduced in Level 2 and is learned in greater detail in Level 3-5.
