Play 3-4 Time on Bass Guitar

CASEY CORMIER: Okay. Now let us take a closer look at playing in 3/4 time, how we would use a metronome, how would we count with this. Well, as we have played in 4/4 time, before we counted as one, two, three, four, one, two, three. Now, a 3/4 of course will be counting to three each time, one, two, three, one, two, three, but the chances of us just playing quarter notes or the same notes over and over again are pretty slim if we are going to be playing more advanced things. So if we use a metronome, sometimes that will help with the beat. Now, we want to make our beat, I usually like to keep it at a zero level where everything is equal and that makes us rely on our counting skills. Okay, let us slow down some, one, two, three, one, two, three. And this is a famous bass line from a jazz song and it starts with a pickup note, which is on the "and." one, two, three-and, one, two, three, one, two, three-G, C, G, C, E flat-G, C, G, C, E flat, two, three, [HUMS AND PLAYS BASS LINE]. When you get used to playing this [PLAYS BASS LINE], take it up a tempo, a couple beats. Now the tempo is marked at 100. Now, the important thing is not to allow yourself to get off track. I am still counting in my head. Two, three [PLAYS BASS LINE] one, two, three, one, two, three, one, two, three, one, two, three. So, you need to keep counting, tapping your foot, everything like that until you can internalize that feeling and keep playing on a loop. If you want to you can use your metronome set on the beats of three. Two, three, one, two, three, one, two, three, one, two, three, one, two, three, one, two, three. That helps but I recommend trying it without first. That is for extra help.
