Using a Metronome to Play Bass Guitar Rhythm

CASEY CORMIER: The practicing bassist's best friend is a metronome. A metronome is a way of keeping time. We are not all born with internal clocks; we do not all have perfect rhythm. A metronome can help us to develop this. So here's an example, here's an electronic metronome. You can find different kinds. There is the kind that looks like a clock, going back and forth, but basically any metronome usually serves one purpose, staying on and keeping time. If you got something like this, you really want to simplify your beats. The tempo is 120 beats per second right now, you should be able to alter that, say slow it down to 100, maybe 80, and then try playing along with it. So, with your bass, just try playing one, two, three, four, let's say the A string. One, two, three, four, one, two and tapping your foot, see? One, two, three, four, one, two, three, four, one, two, three, four, okay? This is good practice in any way, on your open keys or playing maybe along with a melody. A-G-F-G, A-A-A, hold it, G-G-G, A-C-C. I recommend buying a metronome if you do not already have a good internal clock, and if not then try practicing tapping your foot when you play in keeping rhythm.
