Bass Guitar Rhythm Tips

CASEY CORMIER: In previous segments, we discussed the melodic aspects of the bass guitar. We learned the notes on the fretboard, we learned how to play scales and different melodies, but the bass guitar also functions as a rhythmic instrument. It's really important that the bass guitar in a band locks with the drummer, and to understand how to get better with our rhythms, we are going to learn how to use a metronome, which will keep time for us, also how to tap our foot and nod our heads along to it, so eventually we do not need the metronome; we will have an internal clock. We will learn how to read rhythms on the bass clef including eighth notes, sixteenth notes, triplets, and we will learn how to read time signatures. We will do some rhythmic reading examples to make sure that we really understand what we've done before we move on. We will discuss also playing rhythmically. It's not enough just to read it; we also have other methods of playing. We have popping and slapping techniques and we can play staccato, where we meet the notes in between. So please join me in learning how to play your bass rhythmically.
