How to Dispose of Trash while Hiking

Hi this is David Jackel on behalf of Expert Village and I am here to talk to you about trash disposal in the Appalachian Mountains. Because the Appalachian Mountains are so populated, because so may are people are hiking in the Appalachian Mountains down the Appalachian Trail, trash is a serious concern. It is a concern for two major reasons. One is that it pollutes and it is ugly and it makes the whole place less enjoyable for everyone, but the second reason is that trash can actually be dangerous. Trash can pollute the areas where we are. It can get into our water supply which can really hurt us, and it can also attract dangerous animals. So when you are in the mountains, keep perishable items like food that you do want anymore buried when you are down with it. Do not just leave it out in the open because it is going to attract a curious animal and you do not want a bear scratching at your tent because it smells old, rotting garbage. Stuff that is non-perishable like plastic wrappers do not belong in the wilderness. Take them back with you. Keep a small plastic bag with you for trash like that that you can keep in a separate part of your backpack. That stuff should leave the mountain with you. And never, ever dump garbage in the water. You can hurt somebody, including yourself, if you put garbage in the water. So wherever you are dumping your garbage, even though it is going to be biodegradable, do not dump it near the water. So when you are in the mountains, be courteous. Take back with you everything that you brought. Do not leave waste in the mountains, and whatever you do have to leave there keep it buried, out of sight and out of scent for animals.
