How to Find Food in the Appalachian Mountains

Hi, this is David Jackel on behalf of Expert Village and I'm here to talk to you about finding food in the Appalachian mountains. If you run out of food, you have two options. One of them is to forage for food. That means searching around for food in the wilderness and the other is to seek out other people and try and get some food from them. Ideally number two is the best option because people are going to have food that you know is safe to eat and they can probably help you get to a place where there is a lot more food like a shelter or a town. The Appalachian mountains are heavily populated. So, you have a good chance of running in to other people. If you go towards the trail and then start walking down the trail, you are going to get close to people. It is inevitable. But if for some reason you are really out there in the wilderness and you cant find anybody else, then its time to forage for food. One thing you can do is set a trap. An easy thing you can do is dig a hole and then put some bait at the bottom of the hole. Some little piece of food that you have left over and then you wait for a little animal to come along and if you have a sharpened stick or a rock you can hit the animal. Another option is to go fishing. If you have a sharpened stick and you wait by the water, sooner or later a fish is going to come along, particularly if you put some bait, like little bread crumbs, over the water. Whatever you catch, whether you are fishing or hunting or whatever, make sure you cook it. You don't want to be exposed to microbes or any other kind of things that are going to be inside uncooked meat, but foraging really should be your last resort. its much better to seek out other people than to take your chances with food in the wild.
