How to Remove Pedals on a Bicycle

In this clip I’m going to show you how to take off your pedals and install new ones. Now the first thing you are going to want to know is that when you are taking off your pedals on the left side, which is the side opposite of the chain rings that side is reverse threading. So the tool you are going to need for this is either a pedal wrench which you can pick up at your local bike shop or if you do not take your pedals off all that often you can just use a 15 mm wrench but it is going to be a lot harder using one of these because you get a lot more leverage with a pedal wrench. So to take off your drive side, which is the side with the chain rings it is going to be normal threading so you are going to turning left or counterclockwise and once you kind of work it loose you don’t even really need the tool anymore you can just do it by hand and then the other side, which is the non-drive side this is one that is opposite threading. So you are going to want to turn it right or clockwise and same thing for this one. Once you work it loose you do not really need the tool anymore and you can just do it by hand. Now once you are ready to install your new pedals the first thing you are going to want to do is look on the very end of the pedal by the threads and on there they are going to be inscribed with an L and R for left and right side of the bike. You are going to make sure you want to put the right pedal on the right side of the bike and that is the side with the chain rings and L on the left side of the bike. So once you have determined which one is the left and which one is the right you are going to want to put a little grease on the threads and you do this so in case you happen to be riding in the rain or anything like that your pedals would not get rusted on to your crank. So from there you just thread on your pedals and it is going to normal threadings, you are going to be wanting to turn to the right or clockwise with either your 15 mm wrench or your peddle wrench. And same thing for the left side. You are going to want to put some grease on the threads and once you do that you can turn this in and this one is still going to opposite so you are going to want to be turning it left or counterclockwise to tighten it and that’s how you would install new peddles on your bike.
