Let's look at the E major scale and find the notes that fit the whole and half step pattern for a major scale. The E major scale starts on E this is the first note. It moves up a whole step to F sharp. Another whole step to G sharp, a whole step to A. A whole step to B, a whole step to C sharp. Another whole step to D sharp and then half step back to E. Here it is written out going up to E and back down. Let's look at the notes in the key signature. The key signature are the notes that are altered or changed in a major scale. These notes have to be altered or changed in order to fit the whole and half step pattern. So starting on E in order for a scale to fit the pattern we have F sharp, C sharp, G sharp and D sharp this is the key signature of E major. These sharps are alterations to the natural note. They raise a note a half step that way the distance between E and F can be 2 half steps which make a whole step. Let's listen to how the E major scale sounds.
