Let's look at the first note of D major scale. This is D and the staff is located right here D. On the flute in order to play this D you play the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and thumb in the left hand. Play the 1st, 2nd, 3rd in the right hand. This is how it sounds. Let's review the fingering on the flute 1,2,3, thumb on the left hand. 1,2,3, in the right hand. This is D the first note this is called the root or the tonic it is also the last note that you play in the scale and it is repeated. When we play D again we would be playing D the octave above. For these fingerings it is pretty much the same except the 1st finger on the left hand is opened up compared to the lower octave. On the flute you can see this is the lower octave, this is the top D let's try playing. This is the 1st and last note of the scale.
