I will first talk about what a major scale is. A major scale is a group of 7 different pitches from the 12 pitches found in even temperament in western music. These 7 pitches are put together in a certain pattern. The pattern is a collection of whole and half steps in music. Let's look at this pattern between the different notes and then talk about it further. The pattern goes to the 1st to the 2nd note whole step. 2nd to 3rd whole step. 3rd to 4th half step. 4th to 5th whole step. 5th to 6th whole step. 6th to 7th whole step and then 7 back to the 1st note of the scale another half step. Let's look what whole and half step are with a visual on the piano to further understand it. We would be talking about B major so B moving up to the next note is a half step. There is nothing in between these notes so a even temperament this is a half step. From B moving up 2 half steps to C sharp we have a whole step this is a whole step. Let's look at the pattern one more time. 1st to 2nd whole step. 2nd to 3rd whole step. 3rd to 4th half step. 4th to 5th whole step. 5th to 6th whole step. 6th to 7th whole step and then back to B again half step. This is the major scale pattern.
