RYAN LARSON: So today, we're going to go over bossa nova on the guitar. But I'm going to teach you first your first three basic chords, your major chord, your minor chord and your 7th chord, and we're going to learn each three of these chords on the E string, the A string and the D string. So nine chords in general. And just by taking these nine chords, which you can write down, we'll show it to you visually so you can write them all down at home. And learning one major scale, our B flat major scale, we can go through and analyze the tune and find all these different roots that come out of this song, and then we can go through and play the appropriate chord for the appropriate chord changes. And one thing I want to go over right now is we do not use a pick while we're playing bossa nova. It's all finger-picking. So what you want to do is hit the low string or the root with your thumb and you pluck the top strings with the rest of your fingers. And you can get really good at this, just take the first chord we learned and just keep practicing until you get it under your fingers and you'll have that technique down. And we're going to take all these techniques and apply them through reading through a fake book so you can go through at home and play your favorite bossa nova tunes like a breeze.
