Correct Body Position in Ping Pong

SCOTT BROWDER: So what's, we talked about the outside spin and the inside spin with the forehand serve. One thing I forgot to mention was our body positioning on the serve. And what we want to do is we want to be able to spread our legs so that they're more than shoulder width apart. And we want to be able to bend our knees even more than, say, what a normal feel would be. Normally, a nice little bend on your knees would be, it would put you in about this position. But you want to get lower than that and bend at the waist also so that you're down. Your shoulders are actually out in front of your knees and you're leaning forward on the ball so your feet and your toes in that ready position with your feet probably like three and a half to four feet wide depending on how big you are. In that way you're down, you're low, your vision is set so that you're only about maybe a foot off the table. If you watch a lot of professional ping pong or table tennis, they stay down so low that they're down here like this, like it's almost like a tennis match. And the lower you get, and if you practice that way, you will see that you will be able to pick up the ball better, you'll be able to punch in to the ball better and you'll be able to react better because you'll get a better feel of where the ball is going. If you're standing up high, the ball may be low and away. If you're swinging it from down here, you won't be able to swing in where your field of vision is to make contact better and to be able to see where the ball is going to go.
