Overview of High Definition DVD Players

TONY RAMIREZ: Hi, my name is Tony Ramirez and this is the high-definition movies and players. High-definition players, of course, like we've been saying, there's HD DVD and Blu-ray. So if you are going to choose between either one, these are the main players you can choose from. With Blu-ray, of course right now we have--this is a Samsung player, this is a Sony, standard Sony Blu-ray and then of course, there's a PlayStation 3. In my opinion, I love my PlayStation 3; not only for games, but it is--the playback of high definition content is awesome. So, when choosing Blu-ray--in my opinion, I would go out and actually get the PlayStation 3. It is cheaper than the other players. When the Sony Blu-ray player came out, it was around $1000. Of course the prices have gone down because the wars are trying to settle even though they're thinking that they're probably going to keep both formats around, we'll see about that. But, so now you can get the Sony Blu-ray player or the Next Generation Blu-ray player for around $500. That's not terrible. Now, the Samsung will also be around $500 as well and of course, these will play your Blu-ray CD audio and standard-definition DVDs but these are the main difference between Blu-ray. And then in HD DVD, there's not that many companies out there backing HD DVD yet, but Toshiba, all their players are great. This is the Toshiba player right here. There's--let me see, almost four versions that have come out, four or five versions that have come out. Each one just changing its look, they all pretty much do the same thing; play the HD, you know DVD content the best way it can. Another thing you can do is if you own an Xbox 360 already, you can buy an expansion box which is this one down here. I personally have this one. It's great. You just plug it into your Xbox and you're watching HD DVD content on your HD TV. So if you've got an extra $200 to add to your Xbox, you go ahead and get this. You got about $500 or even actually Best Buy just had it on sale for $199, you can go out and get yourself an actual HD DVD player. Of course these play HD DVDs, CDs and regular DVDs. There is one company out there right now that is selling a dual format player which of course will cost a lot more money, but then you've really future proofing your system. You'll be playing Blu-ray, HD DVD, DVD and CD audio. But right now, that's your HD DVD and Blu-ray players.
