CODY KIMMEL: Hi. My name is Cody Kimmel. I'm the lead singer of the band Eliot Fitzgerald, and I'm here with Expert Village to teach you how to write a country song. Let's talk about the purpose of the chorus in a country song. Now, where country is different from folk music, they are two very similar genres. What's different from folk music and country music is that in folk music, the main point of the chorus and of the writing in general is for the sake of protest and stating a moral or something like that whereas with country music, there is elements of that and that's a way you can go. However, with country music, that's not nearly as important. The point of country music, especially the chorus for the country music is to tie the story together in a clever way, in singable way, that's just very--that's simple and easy to remember. The hook in country music is one of the most prominent and singable hooks you'll ever sing in any genre of music and it is something that you need to take time and really work hard on, try to come up with a clever and witty line that might be some--a cliche, that might be said just slightly different or something like that and do it in such a way where it really ties the verses together, where it really brings it home, whether it's a funny song, that's where the punch line goes or whether it's just a story of longing or of love or something like that. That is where the main point comes. The chorus is like stating your thesis and in country music, really what it is is stating the main point of the story and narrative of the rest of the song.
