CODY KIMMEL: Hi. My name is Cody Kimmel. I'm the lead singer of the band Eliot Fitzgerald, and I'm here with Expert Village to teach you how to write a country song. When it comes to structure as far as lyrics go within the verse, the main thing is to remember--the main thing to remember is the verse is there to tell the story. Now, a very common and easy template to use as far as--if you're just starting out as a songwriter and all, it's a good idea to come up with a basic, poetic format that you can use probably in a 4/4 time signature that is a ballad-like format as far as the poetry goes which is maybe one or two stanzas, maybe four lines each stanza and an ABCB rhyming pattern or an ABAB rhyming pattern. And in doing that, because the main point is to tell the story, you don't want the poetic structure of your lyrics to take away from the main point which is telling the story. That is a form of poetry that the American listener is very familiar with and won't be easily distracted by, it'll be very easy to follow the story which is the main point in writing a good country song.
