How to Begin Writing a Country Song

CODY KIMMEL: Hi. My name is Cody Kimmel. I'm the lead singer of the band Eliot Fitzgerald, and I'm here with Expert Village to teach you how to write a country song. Now, let's talk about how to start out in writing a country song. Say, you've got your tools, you've got your journal or notepad or whatever it is that you're going to use, your computer, you got your pen, you got your guitar, you got your cowboy boots, you got your cowboy hat, now it's time to get in the mood to write a song. I like to come into my room. I like to have everything quiet so I don't have any distractions. I like to be in a place that's comfortable to me. Especially when I'm writing country music, I like to be near my Texas flag which is hanging behind me. So, you want to get in the zone for that. The second thing you want to do when you're starting out is just start playing around with different stuff. Now, the strumming pattern for country music is typically swung which brings its roots a little bit from bluegrass and a little bit from gospel. So, you want to start just moving around with different chord structures until you find something that works for you. And once you've started to feel out the different sounds and feel out the different chords, maybe hum some melodies, stuff like that, just get in the zone and get in the mood because remember, we're writing a country song. To write a country song, you've got to be in the zone and in--and just feel the country music around you.
