Purpose of the Chorus: Alternative Pop Songs

Hi. My name is Cody Kimmel. I am the lead singer of the band Eliot Fitzgerald and I'm here with Expert Village to teach you how to write an alternative pop song. Now that we have written our verses, or at least a verse, and we've written our prechorus, both very important ingredients to writing an alternative pop song. We are now to the most important part: the chorus. Now especially for an alternative pop song, the chorus, it will by far be the most important part of your song. For two reasons. For one, the purpose of the chorus is to bring the song together. This is what the verse and the prechorus are leading up to and later, what the bridge will be kind of turning from. So, developing a good, strong chorus, for that purpose is going to be important because, really, that's kind of the glue, that's kind of the mortar that's bringing all the bricks together is going to be the chorus. Now, another reason why the chorus is so important is because this is going to be, hopefully, if you're writing it right and you're doing it right, the most "singable" part of the song. You want to have a good hook and the good hook is going to come at the chorus. This is the part that when people get it stuck in their heads, this is the part they're going to be singing. This is the part that whatever theme that you were trying to go with is going to be tied in. If you have a special line or something like that. For example, "last night on the town", that's what I was commissioned to write about and that is the example that I'm going to give. Trying to incorporate that line in a clever and creative way into the chorus so that it's memorable, so that it's catchy and so that it ties the song together. And that is the purpose of the chorus.
