Laying Out the Top of a Computer Desk

Hi, this is Jon on behalf of Expert Village in this video clip we'll be laying out the top. The top that I'm going to be making is actually going to be made of three quarter inch oak ply on the top which is everybody is going to see. The next layer is going to be just some scrap three quarter inch plywood that I'm going to piece together. The last piece is going to be that three quarter inch cabinetry grade birch, now nobody is going to see the edge of this because its all going to be covered in trim. And nobody is going to see the bottom one unless they crawl under the desk. Now if I were to look at my project from the top underneath the top there, there would be the legs in the corners and then in between the legs there would be that skirt board. Now there is a lot of different ways we can attach that but since I have multiple layers on my top, I'm going to have my three quarter inch birch, I'm going to put screws in through the birch holding all of these together. Then I'm going to come back and put my scrap wood on top and my oak on top of that, so all of these screws will be buried yet it will hold everything together really good. We first need to get a measurement for our top plywood pieces, now our overall width is six feet and our overall depth is thirty inches. But, we are going to be adding three quarter inch oak trim all the way around it to cover up those plywood ends. So we need to subtract a inch in a half from our total width and our total depth measurement. Once we subtract that trim our width we are going to need to cut our plywood to is five feet, ten in a half inches and the depth is going to be twenty eight in a half inches.
