Checking the Rotor, Caliper & Wear Indicator for Brake Pads
Hi! This is Jon from Expertvillage.com and we are on step 5 of our procedure for replacing disc brakes. Before we get started, there are a few parts that you should familiarize yourself with. This disc shaped object is the rotor. The big piece over here is the caliper. At the base of the caliper, we have a wear indicator and that’s the thing that makes it squeak when your brake pads get really small. You can notice from the wear indicator if your brake pads need to be replaced by how close it is to the rotor. Another thing you want to check for is scoring and grooving on your rotor. This will tell you if your brake pads need to be replaced as well. If there is deep scoring there is a good chance that your rotors will need to be replaced as well. The last thing that you need to inspect is the brake hose to see if there is any brake fluid that is leaking. If so, this may need to be replaced as well.
