How to Sing Vibrato

JAMES MENY: The second technique that I use is using a clock. Something with a second hand. So really simple, ideally most people's vibrato when truly free comes in oscillations of six per second. And so what we'll do is we're going to break up the second and we're going to use a tone that's very easy to phonate on whatever it may be. So for instance, let's say we start here. We're going to go up chromatically here and we're going to go ha, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, and what you'll do is you'll watch your second hand and you're going to break a second into two halves, so one two, one two, one and two and, one and two and--we're doing that tone, we're going to go ha, ah, ha ah, ha ah, ha ah, that's two per second, once that feels comfortable for you, go to three, so you'll going to break a second into thirds, one two, one two, one two three, one two three, ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah--trying to do three per second and then you'll go to four. When you get to about five it will automatically start kicking you up into about six seconds or six oscillations per second. Remember, there's some variants in your vibrato, sometimes, you have little too much or too little air pressure, sometimes you have little too much or too little vocal cord pressure but nothing is static about your vibrato, so if it's five per second, six per second or seven per second, don't sweat it, let it be that until you get really comfortable with vibrato, I would definitely practice vibrato on everything you can do because straight tone is very easy to do, but vibrato adds more color and brilliance and freedom to your voice, that to the listener, makes it sound a little bit more pleasing.
