JAMES MENY: Okay since most people can actually create straight tone and you've learned it ever since you are little kid and so some people say that you have to have vibrato naturally and it can't be taught, I 'm not a believer in that, I think any one can be taught that. It does take a couple of little tricks to make that happen. Two most common techniques that I use and I know there's more than these two out there but the two that seem to be successful for me and my clients are: one, creating a truly fake vibrato which is let's just say that a student comes in with a straight tone. I'm going to have them put their hand on their stomach and I'm going to actually have them create this little bouncy thing in their stomach by pushing their hand against their stomach and creating a little bit of an oscillation in their body to stimulate the vibrato. The straight tone is a crutch, it's something they're hanging onto. So you'll going to have to tell that student that the letting go of this tension that don't--they may or may not feel, is going to allow that vibrato to come out and at first it's going to feel like it gets away from them. So let's say that they have a straight tone like, and you start this thing with the stomach, once it starts getting away they may stop singing and remember the idea is to hold it as long as possible in the vibrato to train your body to get used to it. So they have the straight tone and you do this, they might hear that wobble and stop. And so as you train it in yourself, try to go as long as you can until it starts feeling more comfortable for you to do it. It may take more than a day. It may take a couple of weeks to feel that that's sort of normal for you.
