How to Eliminate Break in Voice

JAMES MENY: So let's talk a little bit about fixing this break or bridge area. Remember there's several bridges but we're going to talk about some of the more common ones which is for the guys what we consider the first bridge and for the females would be the second bridge. And what I mean by bridge again is where the voice changes in quality from one quality to another, it's noticeable. If you're doing a belt, you'll hear that a, a, a, a, aaaaa, it flips into falsetto. So how do we fix that. First thing we want to remember is that we want to close the vowel down as much as possible to give ourselves the least amount of chance of causing any damage or making mistakes. The next is there is actually something that anatomic or physically that you must do to counteract that flip or that break to happen. And in mix voice or speech level singing what do we do is actually lower the larynx. It's not a permanent thing, you don't have to do it forever and ever and ever but you gotta train on it because 99% of the time the reason you are flipping is because your larynx is coming up on you and you don't even realize it or maybe you put your fingers on there and you do feel it and you still don't know how to get it down.
