Choosing a Vocal Coach

JAMES MENY: So test your teachers out. They talk about range, what kind of range do they have? Now remember six and seven octaves are rarities. They are not something that just fall off of trees but if they're limited down to an octave and a half or if they tell you that, "Man 'cause I teach all day long my voice is sore or I'm not warmed up", those are danger signs. Remember the least amount of baggage that you have to carry along with you is where you're looking at. If you can get up in the morning and just start singing that would be the best, you know most freeing experience for you. If you had to do very little warm-up that would even be--you know just a slightly little bit more baggage but anything beyond that you're going to ask yourself, "Do I really need to be carrying around a technique in where I have to squeeze my butt cheeks" or when someone throws music in front of you that has a certain range that I'm not able to do that. 'Cause their limitations are going to be your limitations, it happens in all kinds of voices out there and it doesn't mean that I don't even have limitations. There is certain musics that I sound better at just naturally, but it doesn't mean that I don't or can't sing other types of music without sounding acceptable. So look for that.
