Construction of a Homemade Metal Forge

On behalf of Expert Village, I'm Terry and I'm here today to show you the workings of a forge. This is a homemade forge that was build out of a piece of petroleum pipe that is approximately a quarter-inch thick. The pipe is about ten to twelve inches long. We just use this small forge, we have larger forges that we make, we made this one just for basically making the small branches and things that we do. These are fireplace bricks; these are ceramic fireplace bricks you can buy them at your local hardware store supply. We use these to insulate so that the heat stays into the oven. In here we have a fire retardant blanket you can also purchase that at a chimney and fireplace company that sells fireplaces. That brick there is getting pretty hot. So basically you just want to insulate the inside and the outside, you want to have a door in the front and a door in the back so you can slide rods through and you can heat the whole thing. Right here we have the orifices going to the forge at the top. We just use regular old piping that you can buy at the lumber yard use your galvanized pipe fittings or your cold steel pipe fittings and your orifices are made out of pipe that we welded some plate on. We drilled holes in them and they don't actually touch. It's fixed rigid here but they just shoot the gas in through the pipe and into the forge. You have a valve and you have a hose. You can either use a barbecue pipe to supply it but it's not going to last long. You'll probably get about three and a half hours out of the tank. This is a tank out of an old RV it's a propane tank, it?s approved and they fill it. You can buy a regulator at your hardware store, just a regular propane regulator and you assemble it all together and build your own forge.
