RYAN LARSON: So now we have our F major scale down and under our fingers. Now, we're going to do some walking bebop. The only problem with the scale is it's a seven-note scale: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and there's our 8. But we want to have an eight-note scale so we can do two full measures of four and then land on the 1. Now, the most important thing is you land on the 1 on the downbeat. So now we're going to add an extra note. I'm going to add in this flat 7 right here and you'll hear how we'll land on the 1 and we can just keep walking: 1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4-1-2-3. So what you basically want to do is really make sure that you always land on 1 on the downbeat and you can put little notes in between the scale. But you'll notice I'm always on that 1 on the downbeat: 1-1-1-1-1-1-1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-1. And that's walking bebop, and you just really gotta make sure you always hit that root right on the downbeat and then just find some nice smooth notes to lead into that downbeat.
