Now, in the summertime, as a coach, usually that's your time where you have about a month off and you're in down time to be, what I call, a human being again. You have a month off. Each coach will usually have a week in the office. Whether there's 10 or 12 coaches on your staff, each guy takes a week and then you're off the rest of the summer. During that summer, it's not that easy. During your off time you'll go to different clinics that you'll speak at. You'll have speaking engagements where you'll talk to other coaches. It's a chance for those guys to pick your brain. You'll also study other staffs, whether it's in the winter or summer, to better yourself. Somebody invented a lot of these things a long time ago but coaching has become a borrow and steal type of thing. If somebody else is doing it, usually you'll see 10 to 12 other teams and more start to copy what works. Again, it doesn't take rocket science to be a football coach. If something works, do it. If it doesn't work, don't do it. If it's broken, don't fix it. So, in the summertime, we'll go to different camps because recruiting is a year-round deal. We'll be all around the country. We'll run our own football camp where we have recruits on campus or we'll go to other people's universities and colleges to scout and be around as much talent as we can. Again, there are kids out there and they're looking for homes. You have to do your homework so when it comes time to answer to your head coach with why we took this kid or why we didn't take this kid, you better have a good explanation. Again, summertime for the coaches is your chance, once you've done your recruiting, to take some time and be with your family and friends, get away from football, clear your mind. As you've seen in this video so far, it's really a year round job and there's not many vacation days when you're coaching. Whether you're sick, you're happy, you're sad, you're mad, you're in that office trying to make a difference in a kid's life as one with your staff trying to win football games. At the end of the day, if you don't win, it's become such a business that you won't be coaching too long. So, get after it. It's not just showing up on Saturday or Sunday. It's a year round commitment. If you want it, it's a great reward; it's a great high that can't be emulated by a lot of things in this world. When you, players and coaches, spend so many hours to try to do one thing, and that's win a football game, it's an unbelievable feeling.
