Gain a Better Understanding of a Feral Cat's Mentality
Are feral cats happy? If they food and water and some kind of a shelter, I find, in general that feral cats are pretty dang mellow and happy. But, again, food, water and some kind of shelter. I find that the true ferals, not just the tame dumps or friendlies, but the true true ferals are far happier being in a protected outdoor sort of environment or yard than if you try to contain them indoors or some people put them in cages and tame them down their whole lives and they never get out of that cage, not okay, they're wild, and they want to be outdoors. They want to be wild that's what they are that's how they were born. The hardest thing I've ever done and seen out in the field is when you take the feral kittens away from the feral mother they do express grief and concern. It is the hardest thing on the planet to do, and yet, in some cases you have to do it, because that particular colony can only support so many cats. So people are sometimes okay with the adults staying, but they don't want the fifty kittens that are there. So, I do know that they form familial bonds, just like elephants or any other species. I don't want to...a scientist would call me unscientific to say that they are happy, so I'm not going to say that. I do think that they form family bonds, they are incredible survivors. They are happy with an assist and an assist is food, water and a concerned caregiver looking after them.
