Sword & Shield Yo-Yo Tricks

ANDRE BOULAY: The next trick we're going to work on is called sword and shield. This is a tricky one. It's the one I even have to work on sometimes. And what you're actually doing is your throwing a sideways around the world with one hand like so. And as this is going around you're actually looping through it, just like so. So, let me slow it down for you and show you how you should start practicing the trick. What you want to do, you throw a sideways around the world, just like that. I even actually found as I was starting to just start with a dead yo-yo and around the world yo-yo to get the motion of this. This is one movement into the other one. This is kind of the timing as you can see one is crossing the path of the other just in a slightly different time. And this is an easy way to get that feeling as one is coming up, the other one comes through it, just like so. And then instead of swinging it what you'll be doing with your left hand is loops. Let's see if I can break this down a little more and show you what it looks like going at a normal speed. Another thing you can do is instead of throwing around the world, just start with it dead, start looping and then as it's coming through, you can practice swinging it up through the loops. So, it's just like that. See the motion? So as it's coming through, I swing it up through. Make sure I get the timing correct. You're going to be getting your strings tangled all the time. I guarantee it when you're starting to practice this trick.
