Tips for Making Puppet Voices: How to Master the Art of Puppet Theater

Hello! This is Paul Louis from Puppets n’ Stuff puppets. You can find us on the worldwide web at www.puppetsnstuff.com. We are back with our puppeteer techniques, and we are going to speak a little bit about voices for your character now. I know a lot of you out there say I can’t do voices! Of course you can, everybody has a natural ability to do voices. For instance, when you are excited, your voice might kind of go up high and go, “wow you are really excited!” Or if you are down, you know your voice might kind of go low, and you are a little bit upset, so naturally your voice goes a little bit low. Now, you can over exaggerate those tones and those pitches simply by…for instance, if your voice goes up high, you could give it more of a throaty effect: “Hello good to see you.” Now you see, it is coming right here from my throat, tightening up my throat a little bit, and you can bring it down real low, real, real low and you can may be put a little gravel to your voice, real, real low, real, real low. Okay? I have been practicing it for sometime, so it is not going to happen overnight, but you can practice and could find ways to do these types of things without hurting your voice. Also accents, okay…If you are from the mid-west., you are obviously not going to have a New York accent, but you might want to practice a New York accent…“Yeah, how you are doing, good to see you. Yeah, how are you,” or a western type of accent…“Hey, how is it going? Good to see you.” Little twang there in your voice. Tons of things you can do with your character. Just keep practicing, and I think you will be amazed at the results. We will be right back and we will sum it all up.
