Hi this is Elise McMahon with expertvillage.com and this video series we are going to talking about flea and tick prevention. If you like to find more about my services you can visit my website canineheadstart.com. So in this short video clip we are going to be talking about one of the ways that you can manage fleas and ticks on your dog. We have talked about the topical and oral preventives that you can give to your dog. So now I'm going to be talking about a little bit different this has been around for a long time and these are flea and tick collars. This is a collar that actually have the insecticide on it and you put it around your dog. This is just a example of one. You can read on the package what it kills, kills Lyme disease, on thing you want to be very careful about if you are going to use this product is that you don't want to have this on your dog if use some other type of products. Because a lot of times the active ingredient the chemicals that they are using in one product to kill fleas and ticks is going to work poorly with it or it could be dangerous in association with another chemical that you already put on your dog. The other thing that you want to be aware of with flea collars if you have a dog with sensitive skin or if you have two or more dogs that play with each other and nab and grab each other on the neck it is pesticide that is on the collar and you don't really want that going into the mouth of another dog. Another thing that is important to keep in mind about flea collars flea and tick collars is that if you have a infant or a child around that is going to be touching the dog on its neck and then potentially So with all of those things in mind some people do like to use flea and tick collars. They usually last about three months. If your dog goes swimming or gets wet a lot obviously it is going to reduce the life spend of the flea collar. But it is a option that people do like to use.
