Hi! I am Debbie with expertvillage.com and we are talking about having hermit crabs for pets today. Right now we are going to talk about how to pick your crabs. Most pet stores have hermit crabs, some are better than others, some have a bigger variety than other, so you just have to look at your local pet store and see what they have. One word of caution when you go to the beach, do not be tempted to pick up these crabs and take them home, it is just that they are not adapted to that much change and they will usually die on you and that will be a sad death for you and your family. So, don’t do that, go to the pet store. When you are picking your crabs, ask the pet store people if they can get them out for you, because I would like to see who is going to be walking around and active and who isn’t. Some hermit crabs won’t come out very often at all and you want them to be a little more active and there is just more fun for your kids. So, I ask them if they will just dip them in their water and get him out on the floor and let me look and see who is going to walk around. When you are picking your crabs, you need to think about how old your children are who are going to be with these crabs. You don’t want to get really, really big ones, they can get really huge as big as my hand. I prefer the smaller ones and may be small to medium for young kids, because some of them are going to be a little teeny bit afraid of them and you don’t want that. So they do have a powerful pinch, so you have got to be cautious about that. These crabs are considered according to the pet store and we have sand all over like this are fancy crabs and I am thinking they are called fancy crabs because they are in fancy shells. So, what fun about these is, they are all of different colorful painted shells and the kids like that. Now if you are purists, and you want your crabs to look more natural in your habitat, then you can certainly get crabs in these kinds of shells. I personally like the fancy ones. They just look cuter and the kids like to watch and them give them names according to their shells. When you are buying hermit crabs you don’t want to buy just one, that might be a temptation if you have one child and they just want one little pet, I would not advise that you need to buy at least two or three, may be four, they like, being together they are very social, unlike their hermit crab they really, they travel in packs and in their natural habitat, they work together as families and the word hermit crab actually comes from the solitude of the crab inside a shell, not because he is shy or timid. Although, some times they do look a little shy when they are pulling into their shells, but as you can see these guys are pretty active and they are going to be a lot of fun for the kids.
YOu can too p[ick a crab up off of the beach, that crab would be a lot healthier anyway, because ALL the crabs at any petstore in the entire world were taken off of a beach, hermit crabs can't breed in a cage, not even scientists can make them mate in their labs. When I said they were probably healthier, it is because the crabs that you would pick up off the beach go straight home with you, into your cage. A crab from the pet store is : Picked up off the beach, Shipped in a crate with a hundred other crabs in a truck to the airport, flown to a distributor, forced to move into a painted shell, shipped to your pet store and then bought by you, this is so much stress, that most die within a week no matter how good you are at caring for them, however, don't just pick one up off the beach because it looks cool, make sure you have already decided you want a crab and have bought all the supplies first. I am sorry to say this woman has no idea what she is talking about.
I don't know how she has kept crabs for 14 years, unless she has a lot of money and can replace her crabs every week, because that seems like what she would have to do. She pays no attention to humidity and temperature, which are absolutely the most important things for a crab,k she advocates gravel and dry sand usage, which kills crabs as well, she promotes distilled water.... the list goes on and on... This woman's advice will kill your crabs...
As well intended as Ms. Noah may be in sharing her "expert" knowledge on land hermit crab husbandry, as Expert Village has deemed her based on being an award winning teacher who has cared for land hermit crabs for 14 years, these videos are very misleading with regard to what necessitates proper care. There are too many corrections to point out here on each of Ms. Noah's videos so, if you are truly interested in providing care that gives your hermit crabs the opportunity for a happy, healthy and longer life, and you prefer to have pets that not only survive, but thrive, please visit landhermitcrabs.com. We look forward to meeting you!
Omg this woman is a fool. Please please if you're a new owner, do not listen to a word she says. Do the opposite.
she is an expert. an expert hermit crab killer. when she is talking, put your fingers in your ear, you will be smarter for it.
If you see any dead hermit crabs or limbs all over, complain. Also, the pet store water is chlorine water, so you shouldn't ask to get them out with water. Another thing, painted shells can get hermit crabs sick, because the paint they use peels off easily, and they can eat it.
Look for attena(mispell?) activity. Some crabs are naturaly shy, it doesn't mean there is anything wrong with them.
MOST ALL OF DEBBIE'S VIDEO ARE EXTREMELY INCORRECT! please do not follow her instructions. come and join www.hermitcrabassoci ation.com where people have been dedicated to really researching hermit crabs facts. 1. hermit crabs need a GLASS TANK with a LID to hold in high amounts of humidity. The humidity neds to range from 72-85%. 2. hermit crabs need NATURAL SHELLS! Painted shells can chip and may become a hazard to hermies. 2. Hermies need either SAND or COCONUT FIBER as a substrate. they CANNOT burry in gravel (that doesn't even take a rocket scientist to know!). the sand needs to be moist, NOT DRY or completely wet. 3. You'll need a humidity gauge and a thermometer! THESE ARE REQUIREMENTS so you can read the percentage and degrese! 4. Hermit crabs need FRESH FOOD! They need variety! They love all types of fruits, veggies, plants, meat, and nuts. Check out http://www.epicurean -hermit.com/index.ph p?PHPSESSID=6aaa0f87 13048982bc184f911ebd 931c&board=21.0 for full lists. 5. hermit crabs NEED a buddy! they are highly social ridding their name. 6. they need FRESH and SALT WATER that has NO CHLORINE (it can kill). the salt water needs to be made from ocean salt mixes that you can find at pet stores. 7. hermit crabs can live MANY MANY years (30 !!!). they are not like bugs, they DO have long lifespands! 8. THEY MOLT, therefore they need to burry themselves. When they molt, they grow so they need many different, NATURAL shells. I hope this helped those who REALLY wanted to learn about hermit crabs.
And their callling YOU a fool?! Their fools! They don't know anything about crabs... are they experts at crab care? I didn't think so.
