Testing for Power When Installing a Doorbell

Hi! My name is Chad Smith and I'm a state certified Journeyman Wireman basically a electrician and I'm here with expertvillage.com and we are installing a new doorbell in this house. Now we have already been through the tool list make sure that we had all the tools and we where out at the panel the main panel and shut the power off. Now we are inside at the nearest outlet and we are going to test to make sure that the power was shut off. Now I have my meter here which was a analog meter and if you go to the store and you look at meters you could either see analog or digital. Now this one is a analog a digital will have a little read out screen. On that read out screen there would be numbers. So basically on any tester you are going to have a read lead and a black lead. So now we are going to test the outlet to make sure that the power is off. Basically you don't want to listen to your mom on this most meters has two leads one red one and one black one. You take and put the red one in one slot and the black one on the other slot and you would notice that my meter has no reading at all. There is none what so ever so the power was successfully shut off. If you see 110,115,120 or any of those variations your power was not successfully shut off and we need to go back out and figure out why it didn't get shut off. So again just to kind of run over the tips of these you have a analog meter like what I have here and you have a digital meter. You digital meter should read 0.00 or 0.0 if it reads 110,115, or 120 the power has not been shut off. All meters has two leads a red and a black. One on one side of the outlet and one on the other side. Now don't let this stop you cause your mom you mom said never stick anything in this put it is okay to put your meter in there. You would notice that I have no reading so we are going to go to the install. I'm Chad Smith and we are going to install a new doorbell in this house today.
