How To Choose A Vocal Microphone for Your Recording StudioHi! I’m Tad Donley and I am speaking in behalf of Expert Village. I’m giving you tips on how to make your own recording studio. Over here, the bad boy, this is the one that is being used in Capital Records, is used there, it’s used in Sugar Hills, all the big ones. I got it here and you got it here for 45 an hour. This is the Neumann U87 $3000 vocal mike. It is magnificent. AKG puts out a $600 mike, sometimes it kind of takes a woof out of your mouth, the bottom of woof kind of like falls off sometimes, and there is frequency that misses on that AKG and I am sorry but I used it for seven years and I know I had to EQ it to get my woof, my mouth back up in my face, get that, all back to normal. Well this, no problem man. If you are going to get a mike, you got some money, get the Neumann U87, don’t waste your time on anything else, don’t. You will have a perfect… just bring up the EQ a little bit up on the top end a little bit, just like make a nice little curve on the top, you got yourself the best sound you can possibly get, that’s it.

Oh My God! This guy is a HACK! TAKE HIM DOWM - HE IS NO EXPERT!!! He is only trying to get people into his studio. I have 25 years engineering experience, based in NYC. I have engineered all across the US and have several PLATINUM records. I teach audio at a prestigious university and my 1st year students know more than him!!!
DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS JOKER! He is sadly spreading incorrect information to the masses. I wish they would take his videos down. He knows a bunch of Catch Phrases but is sadly mistaken on basic terminology and audio engineering concepts. He is quite biased towards and away from certain brand names and how they function, which I can only assume he doesn't understand. He can barley speak coherently on the subject matter. I don't claim to be an audio engineering guru even though I have many certifications and many more years of experience but I could back this guy up against a wall and make him cry.
no .. you HAVE to leave this guy here ... it is the best comic relief I have seen in a long time. How you found someone that was willing to go on camera as stoned as he is blows my mind. Not only does he not have a clue as to what he's doing, he has no idea what an idiot he looks like. I look forward to more episodes. Can he do one on rigging maybe? I'd love to see him demonstrate that!
I would agree that the U87 is a nice microphone. It's not the only mircophone. What about Blue, Rode, Shure, and etc. He didn't even mention the different types of microphones: Ribbon, Condenser, Dynamic, and what makes them different. Tad Donley is a train-wreck. I have heard nothing of value in any of these videos. So far I have gathered, he hates Pro Tools, Behringer makes the best AD/DA converters, who needs a U87 when you have an SM58 because everyone should sound like Paul McCartney. Again- find Modern Recording Techniques By David Huber- it's like 36$ on Amazon, which is in fact 9$ cheaper than an hour with Mr. Tad Donley at his studio. If you want to become an engineer- this book is a great place to start (in my opinion).
Yet another incredible video. There have been so many different microphones used on hit records, to say any single one microphone is best is ridiculous. You need to choose a microphone that is suited for the sound source it is recording. This guy is a charlatan.
This is worthless advice. The U87 is a great mic, but it isn’t the best for every situation and it will not always get you “the best sound you can possibly get.” He incorrectly leads you to believe that if you buy this mic, you get great sound. There are so many other things involved (preamps, compressors, etc.). Mics should be selected based on the character and type of sound you’re recording, not just based on brand name. I believe these videos should be removed due to the inaccurate and extremely biased information they contain.
