How to Return a Ping Pong Serve

So, we've already talked about the serve, now let's say that the other, your opponent is going to serve to you, what do you do? Well, basically, he's going to be able to hit it, like I said, anywhere on the table. And that's going to be in play, so you're going to have to be ready for anything. So you want to try to get somewhere in the middle of the table, and not too close so that you're crowding the table because if he hits one back here, it's obviously going to be tough to hit. So, you want to get, I usually am like two feet away or so. Try to get my good balance going, get my ready position for ball and then when he hits it, then you're just turning and you're following through. Same way with the backhand side, you're turning your body - my backhand needs work. You're turning your body and you're basically, just following through with your hand. You want to try to hit, you don't want to be able to get way out in front of the ball because that's when your arm, because of the length of your arm being extended, will change the angle of your paddle. So, if there's a short ball, obviously, you really don't have a choice, but most of your shots you want to hit just off of your front foot. You don't want to extend out past that and you don't want to get it jammed up in your body so that you're hitting the ball off your belly button. You want to be able to get out in front of it so that it's a natural arcing shot and then you can adjust the angle of your paddle after you've hit some shots. But that's basic return of serve. Stay on the balls of your feet and don't let them ace you.
