Hi, this is David Jackel on behalf of Expert Village. I'm here to talk to you about how to do last minute promotion for a rock show. Now, you shouldn't have to be doing last minute promotion. You should be preparing within a month of the show. For some reason or other it will happen (again) that you have to do last minute promotion. Maybe you got a show last minute yourself. Someone said "Hey I've got an opening next Saturday. Can your band play?" and you said sure. Then you have three days to get people interested in your show or maybe you screwed up and forgot that you promote a show and now the clock is ticking so you've got to get information out there. So, what do you do? First of all, prioritize. Make sure that you are putting your energy in the right place. There is no sense in designing a flier and putting up fliers all over town for an event that's going to happen in three days. People aren't going to get a chance to really look at the fliers in time. Don't waste your time with that. Spend your time doing two things. One, go nuts on the internet and get all the information out there. This is the one time when it's okay to bolage people with information. Go on to MySpace. Do a bunch of postings. Put up all sorts of information there. Go on to message boards. All that stuff! Normally this is not a good thing to do, but in a last minute situation where you haven't been doing any promotion, it's not quite as bad. Another thing you can do is go through your personal network, contact everyone you know and let them know about the show. Let them know that this is a last minute thing. Find an angle for the show. It shouldn't just be business as usual. Maybe it's a CD giveaway. Maybe it's your last show in the area for awhile. Think of something that is going to make the show different so people don't mind that it's last minute notice. Also, don't go through the motions of waiting for the gears to turn and all of the different processes. Get right into it. Make personal connections with everybody you want coming to the show. Call people up on the phone and say "Hey, my band's playing a show Friday night can you come out?" Stuff like that, where people will feel more interested in coming because you actually got in touch with them. Remember, last minute promotion is essentially damage control. So, it's much better to promote well in advance.
