How to Work with Venues to Promote a Rock Show

Hi, this is David Jackel on behalf of Expert Village. I'm here to talk to you about doing cross promotion for a rock show. Now, cross promotion means having more and more people involved in the promotion, because everybody who's involved benefits from the other person getting promoted as well. So, if you're doing cross promotion there is two basic ways you can do it. You can cross promote with a venue, which means that in the process of advertising your show you're advertising the venue. In return the venue helps out by advertising you. So, how do you do this? Well, you make sure that in any kind of promotion you do, the venue's name is prominently displayed. Both in fliers that are going out on the street, also on internet campaigns. Another thing you can do is cross promote with other bands. Chances are you are sharing a bill with at least two other bands, maybe three other bands and maybe from four other bands. If that's the case you can pool your resources and do a lot more promotion if you're all working to promote each other. Promote the show as a single show rather than a night where four or five different bands are all playing at the same venue. Think of it as a community event and that way people will be excited about coming to the show. What you can do for cross promotion is when you make your band's flier, you make sure that you list the other bands that are playing as well. In return they'll do the same thing for you. So when they put up their fliers people will see your name as well. You can get together with the other bands and you can make one flier that represents the entire show. That way, people see the same flier everywhere and it looks like that one show is really important. If you are all chipping in, you can afford to get a color flier which is going to catch the eye more than a black and white flier. It's also helpful to list the start time of the show as when the doors open not when each specific band plays. That way people see it as one larger show to come to and chances are fans will stick around for all the bands, rather than having people come in for one band and then leave. Then there is really no sense in sharing a bill with other people at all. So, by treating the event as something that is part of a larger community, you get the venue involved. You get the other bands involved. Working together everybody puts on a much larger show.
