Hi, this is David Jackel on behalf of Expert Village. I'm here to talk to you about writing a one sheet for promoting a rock show. Now, a one sheet is just that. It's one sheet that has all the basic essential information for what you are doing. Ideally a one sheet is a quick reference that whoever is reading it can go to to get any particular piece of information that they're going to need. So, what should be on the one sheet? Well, you're going to need a photograph of your band. If you have music enclosed, maybe a picture of the album cover as well. You want the name of the band. You want to have a description on who's in the band and what they do. You want to have a brief (and mind you it has to be brief) description on your music. You want to have some useful press quotes that explain what you do. You want to have bullet pointed information that people can go to, rather than lost lists, so that they can find the information very quickly. You want to have contact information for your band. If you've enclosed a cd you want to have a track listing and you want to have web addresses. Avoid small type, run-on sentences or anything else that's going to create more work for the reader. When you get a chance, go online and check out other band's one-sheets so that you can get a sense of how other bands are presenting themselves. Whatever one sheet you decide to make, make sure that it's tailored specifically for your purpose. So, if you're sending out a one-sheet for a show where you want to get lots of press, put in press quotes. Make sure that people understand that you are already being talked about, so that you are worth being talked about some more. Where as if you are putting out a one-sheet for a show where you want to be getting lots of sales for a new record. Then you want to have quotes about the album and you want to have more information about how the album was recorded. Remember, a one-sheet is a quick reference. So, make sure that your one sheet functions that way.
