How to Use Mailing Lists to Promote a Rock Show

Hi, this is David Jackel on behalf of Expert Village. I'm here to talk to you about using a mailing list to promote a Rock Show. Now, a mailing list is an excellent tool if used properly. Unfortunately mailing lists are often used the wrong way and end up just becoming a hassle for everyone involved. The point of a mailing list is to have a bunch of different email addresses that you can contact anytime you have some wonderful even going on that you want to let people know about. The key though is to make sure that the people who you contact enjoy getting the letters from you, rather than seeing them as an annoyance. To start a mailing list, you need to get the names first of course. So, when you're at a show leave a list on the side somewhere (maybe by you merch table, maybe by the bar) that has a spot for people to put their names and also a spot for them to put their email addresses. I like to lure people to my mailing list by leaving bits of candy around. Sometimes people come over, they grab the free piece of candy and they decide to sign. Why not? When you get home from the show enter all the information you have from the mailing list into a database. Later on you can use that to start a mailing list that you send out to people. Don't do it more than (really) once a month or once per event. Always make sure that the mailings are done in a way that people can't see each others addresses, because people do appreciate having their privacy kept in tact. When you do send out a mailing, make sure it's short, make sure it's informative and that you don't fill it with unnecessary garbage that people are just going to skim through. Include links for things like tickets (if you have them for sale online), for sound samples, and for press reviews. Another thing you can do with a mailing list is have some sort of special promotion where people who are part of the mailing list get access to something like free tickets or free merchandise. That way they actually appreciate being on the mailing list and see it as sort of a privilege. Make sure that whatever you do on the mailing list, it's done in a way that isn't a harassment, but actually makes people excited to read your latest writing.
