How to Write Promo Copy for a Rock Show

Hi.This is David Jackel on behalf of Expert Village and I'm here to talk to you about writing promotional copy for a rock show. Now, promotional copy is the writing that you do for the promotions. Its what goes into the advertisements, into the publicity, all that stuff. And the kind of writing that you do depends on who's going to be reading it. So, for example, if your sending out letters to the press you wanna have very detailed systematic writing. Whereas if you're sending out information on the internet, to friends on MySpace, you wanna have the writing be more casual and more conversational. Think always when you're writing promotional copy about who your audience is because it's very important to write to your audience. And if you don't do this your audience is gonna become bored and not bother reading what you've written. Regardless of who you're writing for, whatever you write should be brief because people don't want to have to read through too much information. It should be informative and get to the point and also it must be honest. Any time a band claims to be the next something from somewhere, you know that's nonsense. If you're still at the point where you're writing your own promotional copy, you're not the next big something from anywhere yet so you shouldn't write statements like that, no one's going to believe it. The best thing you can do for writing copy in fact is to read what other bands have written about themselves. Because then you'll get a sense of what you should and what you shouldn't write. If you read something that engages you, then that's the right style, but if you read something that bores you or makes you say oh come on they cant be saying this, then you know that's not how you want to write. So, keep it short, keep it simple and keep it honest. Make sure that people know what they can expect and get an honest reason for coming to see you.
