How Long to Cook a Turkey
Hi my name is Lori with Figs Catering in Austin, Texas on behalf of Expert Village today we are going to show you how to make a entire Thanksgiving meal. Now that our turkey is nice and seasoned it is time to cook it. So there are different cooking times depending on the size of your bird that you want to make sure that you are aware off. The roasting time for a unstuffed bird meaning there is no stuffing in the cavity of the bird so if your bird weights 1018 pounds you are going to roasted to 3 to 3 1/2 hours. If your bird weights 15-22 pounds your roasting time is going to be 3 1/2 to 4 hours. If it is 22-24 pounds you are going to roasted it 4 to 4 1/2 hours. If it is 24-29 pounds 4 1/2 to 5 hours and one of the things you want to consider that you want to bake it your bird until the skin is nice and light and gold. Now what you want to do after that is go ahead and tent in order to keep the skin from turning to brown and that is just taking a piece of aluminum foil and laying it on top of the bird. You don't want to completely wrap it in aluminum foil cause then you are steaming the bird instead of allowing it to roast. Basting is not necessary but it can promote a evening browning. If you do baste you always want to make sure that you are baste with a fat to with the juices. Our turkey is about 10 pounds so we are going to roast it in 350 degrees for about 3 hours. We would check it at the 2 hour mark to see if we need the tent the top of it.
