Temperature Hazards in Refrigerators

Hi! I'm Kay and we are filming for expertvillage.com here at Carter's Appliance in Fontana, California. Typically one of the hazards that can occur with refrigerators is that it will not keep the proper temperature. In the event that the refrigerator is not cooling properly, food that is kept in the fresh food section where your milk and produce and other perishables items are stored, they can begin to spoil. You will immediately notice it especially with the milk product because it will curdle within 24 hours. You will notice by the touch of the items as well. The temperature in the inside is going to vary with most products. On some of these products, the refrigerator unit have alarms that go off and they will tell you if the temperature has dropped below normal. You also have a readout for the normal settings. This is the initial setting that comes from the manufacture which is 38 degrees and you want to keep your food at that temperature as well to prevent any spoilage. In your freezer some things that may go wrong is if your freezer is not holding the temperature properly, you may notice a frost build up in the freezer compartment or you might notice water below the refrigerator on the floor. That is an indicator that something is wrong with the temperature control in your freezer because food is defrosting and then refreezing, defrosting and refreezing. You will notice freezer burn. That is a big indicator and partially thawed frozen food in the freezer and that can be extremely dangerous. One of the reasons that you want to eventually upgrade with a new refrigerator is because they have better insulation. They have better pressure system in them. They are quieter in their functions, they hold the temperature much better than your older models and they have to have better ratings as far as energy usage. So one of the things you can remember to look for is does it have an energy star rating. That product in itself will tell you that it holds much less energy than your older models. Anything that is 5 years old or greater is going to pull considerably more energy than what new products do. Hopefully when you are in the market for a new refrigerator, you will come see us here at Carter's Appliance in Fontana, California, located at 17525 Arrow Boulevard. Have a good day.
