How to Subtract Stitches from a Spiral: Crocheting Beanies

Hi, my name is Elissa with Expert Village, and today I'm going to show you how to crochet a beanie. So now that you've been working on your beanie, it's time to start subtracting stitches to get the shape that you want. So what we have right here is a crocheted circle and we've used a single crochet, a double crochet and then a triple crochet out here around the edges. And now we can see that the rippling has kind of stopped, now it's a flat circle and so we want to start subtracting stitches to get it to curve down into the shape that we want. So what we're going to do is this: we're simply going to skip a stitch here where we would normally put a stitch here, we're going to skip that and go straight to the next one. And we're doing a triple crochet, so you're going to pull the thread through and then count "one, two three," so there's your triple crochet. And I'm going to start a pattern where we'll stitch two stitches and then skip one, then two stitches and then skip one. So now that we've already skipped a stitch we'll put the next stitch right next to that one. Put your hook through, in front of the yarn, behind the yarn and then pull it through, and then count again, "one, two, three." So now we've stitched two stitches and we're going to skip a stitch right here. We're going to skip this stitch and go to the next one. So put your hook through, in front of the yarn, behind the yarn and through, one, two, three. And then we're going to do another stitch right next to that one. So what we're doing, is just taking away few stitches every so often so that we can start to curve down. So you're going to continue skipping one stitch, and then stitching two....one two three....and then do another one right next to it....one two three....and then skip a stitch. So continue on with this pattern of skipping one stitch and skipping two stitches until you can start to see this curve right here. So now we've gotten to this curve and in the next clip, I'll show you how to go back and continue your beanie on down to the finish.
