How to Work the Strings of a Marionette

On behalf of Expert Village. I am Emily DeCola. I am here at the Puppet Kitchen in New York City and we re going to talk about marionettes. So the next question that comes up with a marionette is 'how on earth do you deal with the strings?'. It goes from the very simple to the vary complex. This is the simplest string puppet of all. A ball on a string. We'll come back to this later this later on. I promise. This in my left hand is the next step up in complexity. It s an incredibly simple control just one rod that moves from front to back. That operates the puppets movement in horizontal space. Forward and backward and one rod moving left to right. With which you can control the puppets head. You can see the head rocking left to right. So with a combination of these two things you can make these very simple puppet do a variety of exciting movements. This particular puppet is this a scarf marionette. Which is an incredibly ingenious an incredibly simple design developed by my teacher. I have studied for the last couple of years. I am a mentee of a German puppet artist Albrecht Rosser. Who works in Stuttgart, Germany. He s 85 years old this year and an absolutely incredible artist. This is his signature puppet.
