Hi I’m Vanessa on behalf of Expert Village.com and I am just going to give you a few nursing tips. First thing to remember when you are nursing your baby is to make sure the baby’s mouth is opened as wide as it can and then to get the nipple in the mouth as far as possible. This will prevent cracking and bruising and sore nipples. There are several ways to accomplish this. First thing is to hold the baby’s chin opened and if they don’t do it on their own, to go ahead and open their mouth with your thumb and then to kind of glam their head onto your breast or you can try holding your breast and putting it into their mouth. That might also work for you as well. Once that has happened, you want to make sure that they maintain suction so if you will notice I have to hold this baby’s head against the breast because he likes to move a lot when he is nursing. If your baby is moving around a lot just go ahead and hold their head, just hold it steady. It’s not going to hurt them. Now you don’t want them to break suction because that can hurt the nipple. That can hurt your breast and you don’t want that. So try to keep it as steady as possible. Now if they’ve finished nursing and they are ready to come off the breast but they are still just kind of munching around, one thing you can do is put your finger inside their mouth between your breast and release the suction and then take their mouth off because you don’t want them to pull away and you don’t want to pull them away if there is still a good suction. Another thing to keep in mind is that their lip needs to be flanged. Go ahead and check to see that. That means they are in a pout and their lip is out and around the breast outside of their mouth. That will also prevent chafing. The most important thing to remember is that each baby is different and each mom is different even within family’s babies nurse differently, it’s not easy. It’s a skill that is learned. Both the mother and the baby have to learn how to nurse and it’s not easy at first but keep at it, don’t give up. It’s worth it in the end. I promise.
