When your newborn’s belly button is first there, it is going to have a little bit of the umbilical cord left. It’s going to black with a little stump on his belly button. This needs care because it could get infected, get pussy and you really need to take care of it until it falls off. That could be anywhere between 3 or 5 days to 7 weeks depending on your newborn. What you are going to need to do every time you change the baby’s diaper is take an alcohol wipe or alcohol swab and make sure you wipe around the belly button very well getting in the crevices and creases and you will notice on the wipe that it is a little black, little bloody. That’s okay, it’s normal. Go ahead and get in there really well. Don’t be afraid to move the belly button. Kind of pull it out a little bit and wipe in there really well. Otherwise it could get pussy and infected and we do not want that. When you put the new clean diaper back on the baby, fold the diapers so that it is underneath their belly button. That way it does not get irritated. Also, when you are bathing your baby make sure that you do not get the bully button wet. The reason for this is because the drier the belly button is the sooner it will fall off. That is also why we use alcohol on it to get it dry and that way it stays clean, stays sanitary and it will fall off on its own. Don’t try to take it off. It will do it all on its own. We just need to make sure that it doesn’t get infected and doesn’t get nasty so that is basically how to take care of the belly button.
