For Expert village.com this is Jason Freedman. In this clip we will be talking about how to collect business cards. So, how do you collect business cards? Well, you just look for them everywhere you go; at restaurants, at the doctor’s office, at book stores, at the hardware store, anywhere you go, they are generally placed out on a countertop which are very easily see and you can grab cards that way. If you want to get cards more than one at a time and not quite such a random fashion, go to something like a home improvement show or an art fare where there are a lot of vendors in one location and everyone has got booths showing off their goods and they usually want you to remember them, so they will have business cards; grab a whole lot of cards in one afternoon. A technique for collecting business cards something you want to think about maybe is specializing in just a few categories, kind of keeps things in check rather than being a general collector or even like me, I make a list of my favorite categories. I like to keep things like architects or graphic designers cards that are vertically oriented people I know; those are just examples of categories that I particularly like. You can ask your friends, families and co-workers to do some of the legwork for you. For instance, my parents happen to like to travel and they are just getting back from a trip to Alaska, so apparently I am now going to own a couple of cards from Chinese restaurants in Anchorage; pretty cool to me. You can join the business card collecting clubs like the IBCC or the ABCC International Business Card Collectors or the American Business Card Club and trade with other collectors, its true. So, in order to trade with other collectors you need to have some cards to trade. My next suggestion would be to always grab more than one card whenever you see cards wherever you are going. You get a bunch of extras that constitutes with what is called your trading stock and then your trading stock you can turn that into cards that you want to keep by trading with other collectors. Also to that end in terms of grabbing extra cards, grab all kinds of cards may be not just the ones that you like again that increases your trading stock. Another way to get more cards is to post a message on some sort of a message board online like freecycle.org or Craig’s list and its kind up in the air you don’t know who from the general public will contact you with your request but it has worked for me in the past a few times. A little bit more concerted effort with a better return rate and a little bit more effort that has been successful for me is the technique of a letter writing campaign and we can get to the letter writing campaign in the next segment.
